Mumbai Police have arrested a 23-year-old woman for allegedly murdering her mother, whose remains were discovered in a state of advanced decomposition in their home.

23-year-old Rimple Jain was arrested for the murder of Veena Jain when pieces of flesh and bones were found scattered in a steel tank and wrapped in a plastic bag stuffed inside a closet in their home in Mumbai’s Lalbaug area.

The crime came to light when Veena Jain’s brother and nephew approached the police on Tuesday 14th March 2023 to report her missing, as they had not seen her since 26th November 2022.

Upon searching the residence, the police found the plastic bag in the closet with its grisly contents. Neighbours had previously suspected a dead rodent behind the foul smell emanating from the house, but construction work in the area had also led them to believe that the smell was not significant.

According to the police, Veena Jain had four brothers who used to assist her with the household expenses every month.

The police apprehended Rimple Jain on Tuesday night, as she was found sitting inside the room when they knocked on her door. The victim’s body had been kept in the closet for several months, and police said that it had been mutilated.

Rimple Jain was questioned for hours before being taken into custody. The police have registered a case of murder and are continuing their investigation.

The case of Veena Jain’s murder has shocked the community in Lalbaug, with residents expressing their condolences to the family.

The police have yet to disclose a motive for the crime and are awaiting the post-mortem report.
