In the remote district of Gajapati in eastern India, an elderly couple have not opted for the typical construction of a grand residence to live out their final years, but instead have built their own graves.

Laxman Bhuyan, 80, and his wife Jengi Bhuyan, 70, live in a modest asbestos-roofed house in the small village of Souri under Nuagarh block.

After cutting off from their family and friends, the couple have sold off the majority of their assets in order to fund the construction of the marble grave.

After death, can I see what my children will do with our bodies? They may bury them without any dignity. So I have constructed the graves for us so that we can lie in peace at least after death.

It is estimated that Laxman has invested at least 150,000 rupees into the project. (Approx £1500 GBP or $1800 USD)
