On Thursday 6th April 2023, a man was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 20 years for murdering his pregnant wife by pushing her off a cliff at an Edinburgh beauty spot.

Kashif Anwar, 29, was found guilty by a jury at the High Court in Edinburgh of killing his 31-year-old wife Fawziyah Javed, who was 17 weeks pregnant, during a holiday in September 2021. Anwar claimed that he had slipped and bumped into his wife, but the jury rejected his defence.

During the trial, the court heard that Ms Javed had told a police officer that her husband had pushed her as she lay dying on Arthur’s Seat.

Her mother, Yasmin Javed, also testified that she believed her daughter was in a violent and coercive marriage and had planned to leave Anwar after their holiday.

In sentencing Anwar, Judge Lord Beckett told him that his wife had been entitled to his protection and that he was guilty of a “wicked crime”.

The judge noted that Anwar had shown no remorse and had made no attempt to save his wife.
