A farmer was crushed to death by his own forklift truck after his dog knocked the lever

An inquest into the death of a British farmer heard on Friday 23rd November that it was caused when his dog knocked a lever inside his forklift truck causing it to trap him against a gate.

70-year-old Derek Mead was building a rockery at his home near Weston-super-Mare in June 2017. It is thought the small dog may have jumped up to see where his owner was and hit the lever, which was apparently as easy to turn on as a car indicator, putting the vehicle into motion.

Mr Mead’s brother Roger was killed 30 years ago when his tractor overturned while he was out working on his land.
