A man who shot and injured four people and was then hurt in a gunfight with the police was euthanised in a Spanish prison on Tuesday 23rd August 2022. He was paralysed by his injuries and had been begging to be allowed to die while awaiting trial.
Following the rejection of many petitions by the man’s victims who argued that he should face justice, the courts permitted the man’s assisted death.
Eugen Sabau, a 46-year-old former security guard, shot three of his employees at the security services firm where he worked in the northeastern city of Tarragona. He then escaped and injured a police officer as he fled.
According to a Catalan regional government source, Sabau passed away on Tuesday at 6.30 p.m. local time.
Spain legalized euthanasia in 2021. El Pais newspaper reported that at least 172 people had exercised their right to assisted suicide in the year since the law took effect.
