Woman found breathing at funeral home hours after being pronounced dead

An elderly woman was declared dead at a nursing home in New York, only to be found breathing three hours later at the funeral home where she had been taken.

The woman, aged 82, had been declared dead at the Water’s Edge Rehab and Nursing Center in Long Island at 11:15am on Saturday 4th February 2023.

She was transferred to OB Davis Funeral Homes in Miller Place, New York at 1:30pm. The police reported that she was discovered to be breathing again at 2:09 PM.

The woman was then transported to a hospital for treatment. As of Monday, there is no update on her current condition.

This incident comes days after a similar episode in Iowa.

A care home in Urbandale, Iowa was fined $10,000 after a 66-year-old woman was declared dead on January 3rd 2023 but then found to be alive.

The woman, who was receiving hospice care, was placed in a body bag and taken to a funeral home where staff discovered that she was still alive and breathing.

911 was called and the woman was returned to hospice care, where she later passed away on January 5th.
