An African serval cat that made headlines earlier this year for being found with cocaine in its system has found a new home at the Cincinnati Zoo.
The cat, named Amiry, made its escape after its owner was pulled over by police on Saturday 28th January 2023, according to local animal control officials.
It leapt from the car into a tree, sparking a rescue mission that ultimately resulted in Amiry breaking its leg.
Once in the care of Cincinnati Animal CARE, Amiry was given a drug test, which revealed that the serval had cocaine in its system.
Despite the injury and drug exposure, the feline has made a full recovery and is now living at the Cincinnati Zoo.
The story of Amiry the “cocaine cat” has gone viral on social media, with users finding humour in the bizarre tale. Some have compared Amiry’s story to that of a 175-pound black bear found dead near a duffle bag containing $2 million worth of cocaine. That story was turned into the movie “Cocaine Bear”.
In Ohio, it is illegal to own African serval cats, which can weigh up to 40 pounds.
While Amiry’s previous owner may face legal repercussions for possessing the animal, the serval’s future is looking bright at the Cincinnati Zoo. There, it will join a diverse array of exotic animals and receive expert care from the zoo’s dedicated staff.
