A fire broke out in a house in Hockley, Essex on Christmas Eve 2022, and it was believed to have been caused by a dog turning on a hairdryer accidentally.

Essex Fire Service was called to the scene after reports of a smoke-filled house. Upon arriving, firefighters quickly located the fire in the bedroom and extinguished it.

Both the dog and the homeowner were treated for smoke inhalation.

Gary Shinn, of the Essex Fire Service, stated “We believe the fire started because a hairdryer was left plugged in and on a bed. We think the dog may have then jumped on the bed and turned the hairdryer on, eventually causing it to catch alight to the bedding and mattress.”
