Japan has hanged a Chinese man for the high-profile and brutal murder of a family of four, the first execution of a foreigner in 10 years.
The killings were committed in 2003 by 40-year-old language student Wei Wei and two others. Wei was hanged after spending more than 16 years in prison for murder and robbery.
Wei and two accomplices ransacked the family home of a clothing shop owner and then killed him, his wife and their two children before dumping the bodies into the ocean.
The other two men ran away to China, where one was put to death in 2005 and the other was given a life sentence.
Justice minister Masako Mori signed off on the execution “after careful consideration” which was her first since assuming the post in October.
Wei’s hanging took place on Thursday 26th December 2019 at the Fukuoka correctional facility on the island of Kyushu.
