A man in Manchester was taken to hospital after consuming castor beans, which contain traces of the deadly toxin ricin. He went on to make a “good recovery”.
Police officers wearing protective clothing sealed off Moor Road in Wythenshawe, Manchester, on Saturday 4th January 2020, but the investigation into the incident ended when it was determined there were no longer concerns about the health of the man, who is in his 20s.
Medics called the police after reports that the man had consumed an unknown substance.
The castor bean plant is an evergreen herbaceous shrub. While it is safe to extract castor oil from the seeds, consuming the husks can be dangerous due to their toxic nature.
