Six people die after ground swallows bus in sinkhole in China

At least six people were killed and four more were reported missing when a bus and a number of pedestrians fell into a sinkhole on a city street in Xining, northwest China.

Chinese official television footage showed the bus peeking out of the hole it crashed into just seconds before. Additionally, it shows onlookers slipping into the sinkhole themselves as they assist others in escaping while the ground beneath them collapses.

The emergency management bureau in the city of Xining reported that 1,000 emergency personnel and 30 vehicles had been dispatched to the scene. Rescue personnel requested the use of a crane to lift the bus out of the sinkhole so they could search for victims.

The sinkhole had a diameter of over 10 metres (32 feet), according to official media.

The total number of passengers on board the bus at the time of the incident is unknown.
